TRIP TO THE NAVARRE RIVERBANK: TUDELA

BED4U 02/05/2023
To the south of the Foral community lies the Ribera de Navarra, also known as the Ebro Valley. The warmest area of the region combines the semi-deserts of the Bardenas Reales with irrigated areas in a landscape of natural contrasts. Undoubtedly, this destination is one of the favorites for rural tourism in Navarra.

A TRIP TO NATURE

The Ribera is home to a variety of towns, each with its unexpected treasure: landscapes, memories of the past, traditions, popular festivals... It's time for you to learn more about its environment and gastronomy.

Tourist map of Navarra

ENVIRONMENT

In the Navarrese Ribera, you can learn about different periods of ancient history: the Iron Age, the Roman era, and the Middle Ages. All the most emblematic monuments of its towns are a mixture of different types of art that you cannot miss. Later on, we will provide a guide with the most touristy and essential sites to visit.

The southern area of Navarra is very characteristic for its vast plains, and for the stark contrasts that occur there due to the semi-desert of the Bardenas Reales and all the vegetable gardens located along the banks of the Ebro.

BARDENAS REALES

A landscape that amazes all travelers who visit it. This natural park is a privileged space, with semi-desert areas where you can enjoy the scenery and also go hiking, outdoor activities, and guided tours. You can access this area by car, but only on the designated roads. You can also explore it on foot, by bicycle, by motorcycle, or for the more adventurous, by quad bike.

GASTRONOMY

Thanks to the presence of the Ebro and Aragón rivers, the lower area of Navarra has very fertile land for cultivating different foods. The most well-known ones are:

·Menestra de verduras (a mixture of different typical vegetables from the area)
·Alubias pochas (so named for their pale white color)
·Pimientos del piquillo (red peppers with a sweet taste)
·Espárragos (one of the gems of Navarrese gastronomy)
·Cogollos de Tudela (a type of lettuce that is a staple in summer salads)

Emblematic products of Navarra

All these foods can be enjoyed in any of the restaurants in the Ribera de Navarra.

To accompany all these foods, we recommend visiting the vineyards in the area. There are different wineries where you can taste excellent red, white, or rosé wines that are also recognized throughout the peninsula.

GUIDE BEFORE TRAVELING

Throughout the Ribera area, you can find lively towns, monasteries, castles, wineries, etc. Below are the most visited places that should not be missed on your trip, recommended by the Tourism Office of Navarra:

·Monasterio de Fitero (the first Cistercian monastery on the peninsula)
·Macizo de las Roscas: a hiking trail to see the most famous rocks in the city.
·Baños de Fitero: immerse yourself in the waters with temperatures of 32º and 52º C, the most curative thermal waters.
·Monasterio de Tulebras (the first female Cistercian monastery)
·Visit and wine tasting at Bodega Monteagudo: you cannot miss a visit to learn about the most renowned wines in the area.
·Laguna Lor: a natural lagoon located between Cascante and Ablitas with beautiful landscapes that should not be missed on your route.
·Stroll through Tudela: to get to know the city, it's best to take a walk and slowly explore all its streets. This way, you won't miss anything to visit and you'll find incredible places.
·Cathedral of Tudela
·Bardenas Reales

OTHER ROUTES

If you are visiting for more than 2 days, we recommend not to miss the following sites, which are further away, but you won't be disappointed to explore them.

·Olite Castle: Travel to a world of princesses, knights, and castles by visiting its incredible palace. There, you can take guided tours where you'll learn all about its history and can climb its towers.
·Roman city of Andelos in Artajona: Learn about the history of the Roman ancestors who inhabited the city. You can explore the ruins of its ancient streets.
·Castle and migas in Ujué: Enjoy its enormous castle and all its medieval buildings. We recommend trying some delicious migas for lunch. They are exquisite!

FOR THE LITTLE ONES

If you're traveling with children, the best option is SENDAVIVIA, this fantastic amusement park and nature park guarantees entertainment and learning opportunities to discover the lifestyles of a wide variety of animals housed in the park.

If you're looking for fun and learning, you can't miss it.
